Health Benefits of “Shrooming”

Updated: Dec 5, 2023

Whenever I used to hear the word “Shrooms”, I would instantly imagine Alice falling down the rabbit hole or Jason appearing with a machete. Like many people, I was scared sh**less from hearing horror stories about others bad trips. Years ago, I was feeling trapped in a monotonous life in a small Jersey city, so I decided to take a leap and move to Las Vegas to experience a bit of "fear and loathing". And, boy, did I nail that SH*T!💥

It wasn’t long before the West Coast hippies grew on me, and I wanted to see what all the hype was about shrooming into spirituality. I took a gram my first time, carefully micro dosed in chocolate, waited for about an hour and then BAM!🤯 I was hit with a mind-altering experience. My consciousness shifted to a dreamlike state, and I felt an inner calling to explore my purpose in life. The surrounding energies became more vibrant, and I could feel colors dancing on my skin. It felt like I was downloading data into my bloodstream with every breath, and every part of my body told me that I was encountering a higher power. Crazy, right?😵

Now Ive done a lot of different drugs in my life, and let me tell you none were like this. The effects of psilocybin are both euphoric and mind opening. The walls breathe calmly, colors are intensified and nature looks absolutely stunning when your brain is unlocked. All I wanted to do was meditate, listen to music, be creative and most of all, be GRATEFUL. Something about unfolding the inner consciousness compels you to look around and appreciate just being here. It also helps to answer the inner questions you probably knew the answer to but didn't want to admit to yourself.

My thoughts started to clear, and I felt like a burden was lifted off my shoulders. I saw a vision of myself shedding all fears and insecurities and embracing a new version of myself, full of love and light. As the journey came to an end, I looked back and understood that my trip had been a spiritual awakening. I had been given a deeper understanding of myself and the power of healing in the world. I came back to reality confident and filled with a sense of wonder and fulfillment I had never known before. Every day the world is learning the power of psychedelics and the potential for deep healing and self-discovery they have to offer.

So after having this life altering experience, I wanted to learn more about what is it and why I felt that way. Recently, CNN published an article exploring how psilocybin, the active ingredient in magic mushrooms, can bring about positive and lasting changes in the brain.

The researchers who conducted the study on psilocybin found that the substance can lead to an increase in neurite density. Essentially, this means that shrooms can strengthen the connections between neurons in the brain. This increase in connectivity has been shown to lead to a variety of positive outcomes, such as increased creativity, improved mood, and heightened awareness of self and surroundings.

Additionally, psilocybin has been shown to help people suffering from depression and anxiety. One study found that a single dose of psilocybin resulted in a marked reduction in depressive symptoms for up to five weeks after ingestion. Another study found that patients with treatment-resistant depression saw significant improvements when supplemented with psilocybin therapy. But it's not just psychological benefits that psilocybin has been linked to. In fact, some researchers believe that it could potentially have physical health benefits as well. There is evidence to suggest that psilocybin can enhance neuroplasticity, which refers to the brain's ability to adapt and change over time. This could potentially help with conditions such as chronic pain and addiction.

Despite the promising results, it's important to note that psilocybin should only be taken under the guidance of a healthcare professional or an expert in a controlled setting. My advice for first timers would be to dose in small increments and work your way up, stay hydrated, open minded and make sure your mental is in a good place. You never want to trip hard when you have some demons lingering.

Now if you're totally against using the psychedelic part of the plant for healing, you can always incorporate the rest of these magical compounds. Medicinal mushrooms are legal in almost every state (think CBD) and have various extracts used for helping with serious ailments. Coming up in Season 4 is a company that promotes using medicinal mushrooms for everyday health. Stay tuned!
